Why this wording matters: HOW THIS ARGUMENT IS OFTEN STATED: HOUSEHOLD / COVENANT INFERENCE YOU MAY HEAR: “Circumcision Was the Issue, but the Principle Is Larger” Bible check: Ask whether the passage actually states infant subjects and saving regeneration instead of importing both through a covenant analogy.

Short Answer

Ask whether the passage actually states infant subjects and saving regeneration instead of importing both through a covenant analogy.

What this wording still has to prove

The objection must establish from the text that a later humanly submitted rite is part of the condition by which the ungodly person receives justification or eternal life. It is not enough to say the rite is commanded, graciously appointed, non-meritorious, or performed with God’s help.

THE CLAIM

“Circumcision Was the Issue, but the Principle Is Larger”

SHORT ANSWER

Ask whether the passage actually states infant subjects and saving regeneration instead of importing both through a covenant analogy.

WHAT WOULD HAVE TO BE TRUE

The objection must establish from the text that a later humanly submitted rite is part of the condition by which the ungodly person receives justification or eternal life. It is not enough to say the rite is commanded, graciously appointed, non-meritorious, or performed with God’s help.

2 — What it would have to show: The objection must establish from the text that a later humanly submitted rite is part of the condition by which the ungodly person receives justification or eternal life. 4 — Answer: Ask whether the passage actually states infant subjects and saving regeneration instead of importing both through a covenant analogy.
WHY THIS ARGUMENT FAILS: Distinguish a covenant analogy from an explicit New Testament command or example of the exact practice being claimed.

Galatians speaks directly to circumcision and the law, and that context must be respected. Yet the principle does not stop with circumcision. Circumcision was not condemned because it was the one religious act God would never allow anyone to mention. It was condemned because it was being added to faith as a requirement for justification.

That is the nerve Paul touches. The moment a human act is added as necessary for receiving eternal life, grace has been attacked at the root.

Circumcision was the issue in Galatia. The principle reaches every system that shifts the sinner’s confidence from Christ’s finished work to Christ plus something he must do. If a man says baptism must be added in order to receive eternal life, the ritual is different, but the corruption is the same.

Galatians 5 presses the matter even harder:

Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.

For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.

Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. Galatians 5:2–4

Paul is not saying circumcision was the only possible corruption of the gospel. He is showing how deadly it is to add a required act to the receiving of justification. Once a man is taught that he must add something in order to receive eternal life, the blow has already landed.

Grace has not merely been touched. Grace has been denied in principle.

WHAT WOULD HAVE TO BE TRUE

START WITH THE BIBLE TEXT

Key control passages: Galatians 1:6-9, Galatians 5:2-4, Romans 11:6, Galatians 2:21, 2 Corinthians 11:3-4, Acts 16:30-31, 1 Corinthians 1:17, John 6:47

The governing teaching for this objection is Galatians 1 — What Counts as Another Gospel?. Read the actual biblical foundation before letting the objection redefine the terms.

THE TRUTH — READ THE TEXT FIRST Establish the passage in its context before answering the interpretation built on top of it.

Another Gospel Is Accursed

Paul speaks to that with the strongest language he uses anywhere.

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Galatians 1:6–9

Those words leave no room for soft handling. Paul says these teachers were troubling people and perverting the gospel of Christ. He repeats the warning so no one can dismiss it as a heated overstatement. He does not say the message is unfortunate. He does not say the matter is secondary.

He says the one preaching it is accursed.

Every man should tremble before he adds anything to the gospel.

The Simplicity That Is in Christ

Paul gives the same warning in another letter, and there he puts his finger on the simplicity false religion always attacks:

But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. 2 Corinthians 11:3–4

The gospel is simple, not because it is shallow, but because it is centered entirely in Christ. It is not Christ plus ceremony, religious process, or a finishing act performed by the sinner. It is Christ.

False teaching becomes complicated because it cannot leave the sinner resting in the Son of God alone.

It must add the water, the ritual, the process, the final step, the act a man can point back to and say, “That is what completed it.” Paul says that kind of teaching corrupts the simplicity that is in Christ.

When baptism is made part of the requirement for eternal life, the same corruption has taken place.

The Direct Salvation Question

Scripture answers that question plainly when it answers the sinner’s question plainly:

And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. Acts 16:30–31

That answer is not hard to understand. It is not faith plus a ritual, faith plus a sacrament, or faith plus water. It is “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.”

That answer must govern every difficult passage, every debated verse, and every text people try to use to smuggle a ceremony into the gospel. God has already answered the salvation question in plain words. No later reading is allowed to make that answer less plain.

Someone will say that baptism appears later in Acts 16.

It does.

Yet what followed the answer must not be inserted back into the answer. Baptism followed because saved people should obey Christ. What happened after they believed cannot be used to rewrite the condition stated for salvation.

The jailer asked what he must do to be saved. The apostles answered him directly. They did not say, “Believe and be baptized so salvation can become yours.” They said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.”

The Promise of Everlasting Life

Jesus speaks with the same clarity:

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. John 6:47

Those are not words waiting for ritual completion. They are not half a gospel. Jesus Christ states the condition for eternal life plainly.

The same Lord also said:

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life. John 3:36

His dividing line is belief, not ritual. The one who believes on the Son has everlasting life. Not after a ceremony. Not once a ritual is performed. Not when faith is finally completed by water. The believer has everlasting life.

If the believer already has everlasting life, baptism cannot be the act that makes everlasting life finally his.

Baptism must never be allowed to become the thing that finishes what Christ’s blood already finished. Baptism is real, commanded, and serious, but it does not complete Christ, the cross, or the gospel. It follows faith and salvation as obedience; it does not create faith or purchase life.

Faith receives what God gives.

Ritual performs an act.

The gospel does not tell the lost man to receive Christ and then perform something else so the gift can become real. It tells him to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved.

They see that baptism follows conversion, and then they make what follows salvation into the cause of salvation.

Once that move is made, the gospel categories have been broken.

No sinner can safely trust his eternity to a message that says, “Believe in Jesus Christ, and be baptized in water to be saved.” That message has already shifted off the simplicity that is in Christ.

It has altered the gospel of grace and moved the sinner’s confidence away from Christ alone and toward Christ plus performance.

Obeying Christ in baptism is right. Every believer should take baptism seriously. It is an act of obedience. It is a real identification with the Lord. It is part of faithful discipleship. Baptism is honored when it is kept in its biblical place. It is not honored when it is turned into a saving condition.

Trusting in baptism to complete what Christ accomplished is a false gospel. It makes baptism function as part of the way eternal life is received, and that is what Paul condemns when he warns against another gospel.

Scripture keeps the distinction in place.

Paul warns that any altered gospel is accursed: “Though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.” Paul warns that minds can be corrupted from “the simplicity that is in Christ.” Paul says Christ sent him not to baptize, but to preach the gospel.

The Bible answers the salvation question directly: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” Jesus states the dividing line as belief, not ritual: “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life,” and, “He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.”

If someone tells you that you must believe in Jesus Christ and be baptized in water in order to be saved, he has not merely added an act of obedience after faith. He has changed the saving message itself. He has shifted the ground of confidence from Christ alone to Christ plus ritual.

He may still use gospel words, speak of grace, and say Jesus is necessary. Yet if he adds a human act to the receiving of eternal life, he is no longer leaving the sinner in the simplicity that is in Christ.

He is preaching another gospel.

Another gospel is not a small matter.

It is a cursed corruption of the only message that can save.

KEEP THE BIBLE’S CATEGORIES CLEAR

Keep accomplishment, reception, and subsequent obedience distinct. Christ accomplished redemption; the sinner receives the promise by believing; baptism belongs to commanded Christian obedience. Calling all three “grace” does not make them the same category.

THE STRONGEST ARGUMENT — AND WHAT IT ACTUALLY PROVES

Grant every point that can safely be granted: baptism is commanded, important, normally immediate, and never to be despised. None of those concessions says that the believer remains unjustified until water.

Bible Check: Even after granting that point, does the passage actually say that the believer lacks eternal life, remission, justification, sonship, or the Spirit until the water act occurs? If that sentence is missing, the system still has to supply the causal step rather than read it from the page.

WHAT THE TEXT DOES NOT PROVE

A command does not by itself identify the instrument of justification. A good work need not be boastful to remain a work. A divine command can govern discipleship without becoming a second condition attached to the free gift.

BOTTOM LINE

BIBLE CHECK — evaluate the stated answer from the passage and its context; do not overstate beyond what the text establishes.

The core reading must stand even if a disputed lexical, historical, or theological support is removed. The burden remains on the stronger claim to show its saving mechanism in the inspired text.

FOUNDATION: Galatians 1 — What Counts as Another Gospel?

Lesson 4

Let him be accursed.

THE TRUTH — READ THE TEXT FIRST Establish the passage in its context before answering the interpretation built on top of it.

Paul did not treat the difference between Christ alone and Christ plus a ritual as a minor disagreement among sincere religious people. He treated it as a matter of life and death.

When the gospel is altered, sinners are no longer being pointed to Christ as their only hope. They are being moved, sometimes very quietly, from His finished work to something they must add. The sermon may still sound biblical. Jesus’ name may still be spoken with reverence.

The language may sound Christian from beginning to end. None of that makes the message safe.

The real question is not whether Jesus is mentioned.

The real question is whether Jesus is enough.

The moment a sinner is told, “Believe in Jesus, but you still must do this ritual to be saved,” he is no longer being told to rest in Christ alone. He is being pushed away from Christ’s sufficiency and toward something he must do.

His confidence is no longer anchored wholly in the Son of God, but in the Son of God plus an act he must perform.

That is not a small adjustment.

It is another gospel.

This does not make obedience unimportant. It puts obedience in its place. Obedience follows salvation; it does not produce salvation. Baptism matters because Christ commanded it, and every believer should take it seriously.

Yet the moment baptism is placed inside the condition for receiving eternal life, it has been moved into a place that belongs to Christ alone.

BOTTOM LINE

Adding a required ritual to faith does more than emphasize obedience. It changes the saving message from Christ received by faith to Christ plus an act performed by the sinner.

BOTTOM LINE

The claim must be limited to what the text actually establishes. Command, association, sequence, or symbolism cannot silently become the causal condition for eternal life.
