John 3:5 + Ephesians 5:26 — “Water and Spirit / Washing of Water by the Word Proves Baptismal Regeneration”

Start with the short answer, then follow the Bible evidence.

THE CLAIM

“Born of water and of the Spirit refers to baptism performed according to Spirit-given instruction; Ephesians 5:26’s washing of water by the word confirms that baptism is the new-birth washing.”

SHORT ANSWER

Both passages contain real cleansing/water imagery, but neither sentence states that physical baptism is the efficient cause of regeneration. John 3 must be read with Nicodemus’s Old Testament background and John’s repeated life-through-believing statements; Ephesians 5:26 addresses Christ’s sanctifying work for the church, not a conversion formula defining when an unbeliever first receives eternal life.

WHAT WOULD HAVE TO BE TRUE

The argument must establish two bridges: that “water” in John 3:5 specifically denotes Christian water baptism, and that Ephesians 5:26 identifies that baptism as the causal moment of regeneration. Association of water, Word, Spirit, and cleansing is not enough.

NICODEMUS WAS EXPECTED TO KNOW THE BACKGROUND

Jesus asks, “Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?” That pushes the reader toward Israel’s Scriptures. Ezekiel 36 joins cleansing, a new heart, and God’s Spirit. The background is divine cleansing and renewal; it does not by itself name a Christian baptismal rite as the mechanism.

JOHN’S OWN CONTROL

John 3:16 — whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Verses 18 and 36 continue the belief/unbelief division. Any baptismal reading of verse 5 must harmonize with the chapter’s explicit receiving condition rather than redefine it.

EPHESIANS 5:26 IS NOT “WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?”

The subject is Christ loving, sanctifying, and cleansing His church. “Washing of water by the word” can carry baptismal resonance without proving the added proposition that an otherwise-believing sinner remains unregenerate until immersion.

KEEP WORD, SPIRIT, AND WATER IN THEIR STATED ROLES

The Spirit gave revelation; the Word is the truth Christ uses; water imagery can signify cleansing. None of that automatically makes administered water the cause of the inward birth.

ILLUSTRATION FROM NOT BY WATER — Pilate’s Basin

Pilate washed his hands in water and declared himself innocent, yet the water touched only his skin. The scene is a vivid reminder that outward water and inward guilt are different categories. Water can wash the body; only Christ can answer the guilt of sin.

BOTTOM LINE

The water/Spirit and washing/Word texts support rich cleansing imagery. They do not require baptismal regeneration as the causal mechanism.
