Church of Christ “Bible Way to Heaven” — The Whole Salvation System Tested
THE CLAIM
“Hear, believe, repent, confess, be baptized for remission, and remain faithful — these steps together are God’s Bible way to heaven, and saving possession does not occur until the required response is completed.”
SHORT ANSWER
The individual duties must be kept in their biblical place. The controlling question is not whether hearing, repentance, confession, baptism, or faithfulness matter. It is whether Scripture says a person who has believed on Christ still lacks eternal life, justification, remission, or God’s saving acceptance until water and later performance complete the chain.
WHAT WOULD HAVE TO BE TRUE
The system must prove its added timing proposition: BELIEVE + later acts → only then saving possession. It cannot merely collect verses in which Christians obeyed. It must survive John 5:24, John 6:47, Romans 4:5, Acts 10:43–48, Acts 15:8–11, Acts 16:30–31, and Ephesians 1:13 without redefining “believe” to contain acts the text distinguishes.

STATE THEIR CASE AT FULL STRENGTH
The strongest Church of Christ presentation does not say the water is magic and usually does not say baptism earns salvation. It says grace supplied Christ and the plan; obedient faith responds to that plan; baptism is the God-appointed point where remission, union, or new life is received; then the Christian must continue faithfully.
The original God & Man booklet visibly arranges the response as HEAR, BELIEVE, CONFESS, REPENT, BE BAPTIZED, BE FAITHFUL. Its later pages say “Salvation always came after baptism,” “Baptism gives access to His blood,” and “one cannot be taught wrong and be baptized right.” Those are the bridge propositions that must be tested, not caricatured.
THE FIRST COLLISION: PRESENT POSSESSION
John 5:24 — He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life ... and is passed from death unto life.
The believer is not described as waiting for a later rite before life becomes his. The system can answer that “believe” is shorthand for the whole chain, but that shorthand must be proved rather than placed inside the word by definition.
THE HISTORICAL COLLISION: CORNELIUS
Acts 10:43 gives remission to whosoever believeth. While Peter is still speaking, the Holy Ghost falls. Peter says they have received the Holy Ghost and only then commands water. Acts 15 later says God knew their hearts, bore them witness, and purified their hearts by faith. Acts 15:11 states the grace/salvation conclusion: “through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.”
THE DIRECT QUESTION
Acts 16:30–31 — Sirs, what must I do to be saved? ... Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.
Baptism follows promptly and should. What the narrative does not authorize is inserting the later baptism back into Paul’s answer as an omitted condition that actually makes the promise true.
THE CATEGORY LOCK
Command is not automatically cause. Association is not automatically instrument. Identification is not automatically the creation of union. A Christian duty is not automatically the condition for receiving eternal life. The library tests each proof text separately, but the entire system rises or falls on whether those category changes are actually stated by Scripture.
THE FINAL TEST
If one clear, inspired case positively assigns remission, Spirit reception, heart purification, justification, or life to faith before water, the universal rule “saving possession always waits for baptism” cannot remain universal. That is why Cornelius, the possession promises, and the direct salvation question carry more weight than an inferred chain assembled across separate passages.
BOTTOM LINE
The Bible way to heaven must be the way the Bible actually states saving possession is received. Baptism remains commanded, urgent, and meaningful; the added rule that the believer remains eternally unsaved until water and subsequent performance is not established.
